Darkness

It can’t be seven o’clock, says Hanna, as I drag her from the warmth of her bed. Its still dark!
As the temperature slips downwards the darkness encroaches from both ends of the day, and there is the feeling that winter is coming. But there are some good things about getting up in the dark. It gives me a vaguely virtuous feeling – getting up before dawn! And on the days when we don’t have to go somewhere, like school, its so much nicer, and easier, to sleep in.
Mind you, when Maria is doing a dayshift at the hospital it seems like the middle of the night when she gets up at at 5.30 and heads out at 6.15. The city seemed empty to her yesterday morning – Sunday – as she cycled through the cold, quiet darkness to work.
And winter is still a few months away! How will Hanna be then?
